Maybe so the 9 kingdoms would be saved at the end?
I always asked that question to myself..
What if she didn't had to die? Was she going to be prisoned again?

I asked Simon Moore about that and he said that if there is a sequel someday, the Queen could come back. I specifically asked him if Virginia would see her mother again someday just like Prince Wendell got to see Snow White again and he hinted that it was possible.
